One thing all designers agree on: Colored gemstones make people feel good

Color has a huge impact on all of our lives. Color psychology finds that personality traits are revealed through color preferences, the color of packaging impacts purchase choices and various colors are said to shift one's mood. Colored gemstones hold appeal for consumers for a range of reasons -- they represent personal expression, they have fascinating legend, lore and metaphysical characteristics associated with them and colored gemstones are the perfect way to complement an outfit. But the main reason people choose a color is because it makes them feel good.

Personality
"Each stone has its own personality," says designer Pamela Froman of the eponymous Los Angeles-based company, who finds that the blend of stones and metals can completely change the look of a piece. "Colored gemstones add another dimension of color to a piece that can't be achieved with gold alone. I've developed my own 18-karat alloys so I have multiple colors of gold to work with and colored gemstones expand my palette. I love to take a unique gemstone, like black rutilated quartz, and pair it with a color metal that is not typical, like 18-karat pink gold."

Runway

Despite the focus on color connected with runway fashion each season, the shows have surprisingly little impact on designers. ... Both Froman and Showers admit to paying no attention at all to the runway shows, choosing instead to design with the colors that they are drawn to at any given time.

Mix & Match

While colored gemstone jewelry often has one luscious center stone that is the highlight of the piece, sometime designers will choose to mix their own colors. All designers mix their gems in a way that expresses their own aesthetic and creativity. "For me, it usually begins with the color of the gemstone," says Froman. "Depending on which shade of gold I choose to use, I can achieve bold contrasts, such as 18k-karat yellow gold with tanzanite or rubellite. Other times, I prefer a more subtle, tonal approach, with combinations like 18-karat pink and yellow gold with a peach moonstone. Each combination evokes a different mood."

Diamonds

Colored gemstones have a beauty all their own, but their beauty is still enhanced by diamonds. Using diamonds in a design allows it to go from day to night with ease, notes Froman, who concludes that "diamonds add sparkle and an element of glamour to my colored gemstone designs. By setting the diamonds next to a stone, it pops the natural color of the gem and brings the piece to the next level."

Inside InDesign Magazine, you'll find a great feature from Cindy Edelstein of the Jeweler's Resource Bureau: Customer Types. May 2011 is the Special Couture Issue, so it's only appropriate that this month's Customer Type is the "Couture Collector"!

InStore Magazine Case Study: A Successful Trunk Show's Promotional Timeline

"The Big Story" in this month's issue of InStore Magazine is all about launching a new designer line in your store, and includes a great case study of a Pamela Froman trunk show at Hummingbird Jewelers in Rhinebeck, NY. Contributing Editor Lorraine DePasque interviewed Pamela and the store's owners, Bruce & Peggy Lubman, and broke the event down into a promotional timeline, which I've copied for you below:

In the true spirit of retail partnership, a Rhinebeck, NY, jeweler and an L.A. jewelry designer planned a trunk show with a week-by-week timeline.

Hummingbird Jewelers had been carrying about two dozen pieces of Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry for almost a year, and owners Peggy & Bruce Lubman felt it was time to step up promotion of the emerging designer.

Here's how the pre-show publicity unfolded:

10 weeks before
Froman designed postcards and posters that incorporated photos of her jewelry and Hummingbird had them printed.

8 weeks before
The store announced the trunk show on its website, with a bio of Froman and images of her work.

4 weeks before
Hummingbird e-mailed and phoned clients who had shown an interest in Froman's work. It asked the local tourism office to post the dates on its website. Hummingbird and Froman posted the news on their Facebook fan pages.

3 weeks before (and ongoing)
Hummingbird ran 60-second radio spots, three times a day, on two local radio stations. In the November issue of Hudson Valley Magazine, an article on bridal featured some of Froman's wedding bands, with copy saying she'd be at Hummingbird Jewelers. (Hummingbird had sent rings to the publication so they could photograph them.)

10 days before
Hummingbird mailed postcards and displayed Froman's pieces and the posters in its windows. It e-mailed customers: "Check out Hummingbird's windows this week for a preview."

1 week before
The store phoned clients to suggest pieces they might like.

The Big Event
Froman brought 200 pieces, including one-of-a-kind items. the jewelry was put in the largest showcase, near the entrance, and in the windows.

Retailer's Review
"It was one of our best trunk shows ever," Peggy says. "We'd been pretty conservative with Pamela's line. But when I saw how customers reacted to her color, I decided I'd be adding that."

Niche Magazine's 2011 Spring issue features a portfolio of the best new jewelry collections hitting the market this year, and Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry was selected for inclusion! The earrings shown are Pamela's "Scroll Crush Cap" Mommy Earrings in 18k Yellow "Crushed" Gold with Turquoise briolettes and Diamond accents; the "Scroll Sparkle Stud" portion of the earring can be worn without the Turquoise drops for an every day casual option.

A note about "Mommy Earrings":
When Pamela's "favorite creation", her son, Hudson, came into this world, the designer realized she could no longer live in her "Headlight Hoop" earrings, because they were the perfect size for Hudson's tiny fist to grab hold. This is when the inspiration for "Mommy Earrings" struck: a simply beautiful stud with no sharp edges or prongs wouldn't be a problem for exploratory baby fingers, and a removable decorative drop would allow the earring to be dressed up for dinner with Daddy! Of course, you don't have to be a mother to appreciate the versatility of Mommy Earrings, but it's a great excuse to own a pair...

I recently posted some pictures from the February issue of Russian Vogue, showing Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry on the cover and within the main fashion story. While there's no denying the joy we felt to see Pamela's jewelry featured in such a major publication, March has brought even more fabulous news: the new Editor-in-Chief of Russian Vogue, Victoria Davydova, has selected a pair of Pamela Froman earrings as her jewelry choice this month! We are incredibly flattered.

The earrings shown are Scroll Crush Cap Mommy Earrings, in 18k White "Crushed" Gold with lustrous Black Spinel briolettes and sparkling Diamonds. Pamela calls these "Mommy Earrings", because she developed the design when her son was a baby pulling on her favorite hoops, and she needed a better option... the top of the earring is a Scroll Sparkle Stud that can be worn daily without the drops (no pulling!) and dressed up for a night out on the town. By the way, Mommy Earrings come in a variety of styles, with many different types of drops. You don't need to be a mom to appreciate the versatility of this earring but, with Mother's Day coming up, it could be a great excuse to ask for a pair!

About the Glamour Woman of the Year Awards:

The Glamour Woman of the Year Awards has different national versions held each year in many countries of North and South America, Europe and Africa, to recognize and celebrate women in the public eye.

The awards are determined by readers of Glamour and users of Glamour.com, who cast their votes in 11 categories, for the most talented, beautiful, successful and stylish stars of movie, fashion, television and Internet industries. The glitzy Russian event took place on November 22nd, in Moscow's New Opera Theater, with many celebrities in attendance.

The main award, “Glamour Woman of the Year 2010″ was presented to the glamorous singer and actress Vera Brezhneva. In her interview for “The Voice of Russia” Vera said (translated), “Very many important things have happened in my life this year. First of all, I had a daughter at the end of 2009, two weeks before the New Year’s Day. This is certainly the main event. Another thing is that the song “Love Will Save the World”, which I recorded in April, became a hit of the summer and is still in the lead in many hit-parades. The main event in the autumn is the release of my first solo album which takes place in a week. I really do my best to carry kindness and warmth to the world.”

Description:
The moon has been worshipped since the dawn of civilization so it's no wonder that the shimmery lunar-like glow found in moonstones makes them such a popular gem. The problem is, the most exceptional examples - colorless with a blue sheen - are rare, expensive, and difficult to find. Thanks to recent finds in the India subcontinent, the jewelry industry has embraced a stunning alternative: rainbow moonstone.
Also from the feldspar family, rainbow moonstone gets its name from the traces of albite and anorthite that create a rainbow-like play of colors when light hits the stone, causing phenomena known as "andularescence." While rainbow moonstone tends to appear to emit a lot of electric blue color, it resembles the finest blue moonstones that have become so dear.
Nonetheless, calling this variety of feldspar a moonstone is actually a misnomer - albeit a deliberate one. Rainbow moonstone is really a "rainbow labradorite" since its mineral content comes from the labradorite side of feldspars instead of the orthoclase branch from which blue moonstone is derived. In some English-speaking countries, it's sometimes referred to as "petrol moonstone" since the gem's color play resembles the multicolor film that gasoline displays under certain light.

Origins:
Moonstone can be found in Brazil, the European Alps, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania, with the highest quality moonstones being found in Sri Lanka. Most rainbow moonstone, however, is found in southwest India.

Folklore:
Many of the metaphysical properties associated with moonstones are also associated with rainbow moonstone. The soft hues of rainbow moonstone are said to create feelings of peacefulness within one's self, while at the same time providing emotional strength, compassion, and inner confidence. Its labradorescence and the spectrum of light it creates are said to help with clearing and bringing in "uplifting energies." Therefore, rainbow moonstone enhances balance and harmony. The gem is associated with the Crown Chakra and is said to aid in granting wishes.
Another use of rainbow moonstone is protection, especially for those living in remote or rural areas.
Like the flashes of color, the gem purportedly elicits flashes of insight, increases intuition, and enhances one's creativity. It is said to enhance the power of the feminine, making it a favorite for brides (or those wishing to be betrothed.)

Marlene interviewed Pamela for this a few months ago, wanting to know about her favorite find at the Tucson GemFair this year, and how that gemstone became a piece of Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry. For decades the jewelry design world has been dominated by men. But there has been a seismic shift in the landscape by an enormous influx of gifted women jewelry designers who are approaching their craft with professionalism, creativity, business acumen, excellent smithing skills and a new spirit. Walk the aisles of any fine, craft, gift, or fashion jewelry trade show and you will witness these changes for yourself. One of the insights women bring to the table is that women understand designing for women. And since the vast majority of ultimate consumers are women, this change in demographics only makes sense. They instinctually comprehend how earrings should hang, if a ring is comfortable and if a bracelet is "right", because they are designing for themselves.

Pamela Froman:
"I love going to the AGTA GemFair Tucson show, because this is where I look for special gemstones which inspire new designs. This year the gemstone that took my breath away was an Ethiopian Opal. These opals have so much warmth and fire... they are gorgeous on their own but, when I laid one on top of my 18k pink & yellow gold 'Ombre Cleopatra' ring I always wear, I discovered they looked great surrounded by both colors of gold! I purchased three of these stones, two small pear shapes for pendants and a large oval cabochon destined to become a one-of-a-kind statement ring."

"The design for this ring [shown] began in my sketch book. I love the feminine curve of scrolls, so I framed the stone with s-scrolls of both pink and yellow gold. I brought the curling scrolls into the design of the shank as well. This opal holds so much color on its own, I didn't have to back it with a solid piece of metal, which made it possible for me to design a gallery with cut-outs of scrolls and my signature 'PF' logo. Also, since the gemstone looked so good with both colors of gold, I decided to alternate the colors, so each side of the ring is opposite from the other and you can see both colors when you look down. By the way, I find looking down on this ring, into the depths of the opal, to be very calming. Part of me wishes I still had it, but it has already been sold to a client in Russia, and it now lives in St. Petersburg. Selling a one-of-a-kind piece is always bittersweet."

Style Setters: The Jewelry Brief Interviews Pamela Froman

Individuality is the underlying theme of beauty for Pamela Froman’s designs. In her words, “the more a piece is worn, the more beautiful it is because it becomes part of the person’s essence”.

Pamela Froman was born and raised in Manhattan. After attending the Fashion Institute of Technology she began her career in Paris, designing jewelry for top European couturier salons, including Courreges, Cacharel, Carita, Guy Larouche, and Valentino. In 2006, shortly after the launch of Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry, Pamela was given the “Rising Star” Award by the JCK Show in Las Vegas. Since then, the accolades have not stopped; including recognition by In Design Magazine, the Woman’s Jewelry Association, Town & Country and the MSJA.

Pamela Froman’s unique style incorporates color, form and texture. Texture is possibly the singular feature that sets her jewelry apart from other designers. The “Crush”, as she calls it, is a hand-hammering technique used by Pamela to create individual, irregular surfaces. In fact, all of her jewelry is hand made, so no two pieces ever look exactly alike. They have either a free-form scrolling or organic shape or an “old world” feel with Maltese crosses, wonderful oversized links and amulet-style shapes. Color often comes from the metal itself, and combinations of platinum and gold or different alloys of gold are a recurring theme. The play of light on the hammered metal creates stunning hues. An array of different colored stones is the basis of the Scroll Cap Earring limited edition collection. As a self proclaimed “Rock Hound”, I could not help but love these earrings, as well as all of Pamela Froman’s designs.

How would you describe your personal [jewelry] style?

Sexy and Versatile: I like to design pieces that can be worn casual or dressed-up, because I think jewelry should be worn, not locked away in a safe. I also believe jewelry should make a woman feel sexy, and I definitely design with that in mind.

What inspires your creative designs?

Old-world European architecture has inspired a lot of my designs, especially scrolly wrought iron gates, and the beautiful domes of St. Petersburg. I also look at fabrics, and textured rocks, and often the gemstones I choose influence the design.

Bonus Answer (My favorite design elements)

I love irregular surfaces, so most of my Collection is textured with a special hand-hammering technique I call “Crushed.” Combined with a Satin finish, this Crushed texture gives a much softer, more natural feel to the metal. Aside from the texture, one of my favorite design elements is the Scroll; it’s a very organic, feminine shape, and I love the way it flows.

Past or present who has most influenced your direction in life?

That would have to be my Mother. She is a well-known sculptor, but was a shoe designer when I was a kid. She always encouraged my creativity, and taught me to look at the world artistically. My Mother is also the reason I went to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC); I originally majored in Fashion Design but, while I was there, I discovered my true calling was to be a Jewelry Designer and switched majors.

What are some of your favorite cities?

Visually, artistically, I love Budapest, Prague, Lucerne and Paris; even though I lived in Paris for 3 years, whenever I visit, I am still inspired by its beauty and amazed by it’s nuances. Of course, I can’t leave NYC off the list! I grew up in Manhattan and, though I live in California now, I’m a New York City Girl through and through.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love having the freedom to design whatever I am inspired to design, and then bringing my vision to life. At the beginning of my career, I worked in Paris, designing jewelry for top European couturier salons, including Courreges, Cacharel, Carita, Guy Larouche, and Valentino. While I enjoyed the challenge of designing for established labels, I was constrained by the vision of each company. I felt the need to express my personal style, which is why I decided to launch my signature line. And, by having my own line, I’ve discovered the icing on the cake: when I travel to stores for events, I get to meet the people who buy my creations! I love how the perfect piece becomes part of the wearer, and seeing their excitement brings me joy.

What are you working on right now?

So many things! I’m really feeling drawn to the cool tones right now, and have been designing a lot with blue-toned stones like Aquamarine and Rainbow Moonstone; I just did a crazy-long Rainbow Moonstone necklace that I’m in love with! I recently launched a new collection called Arabesque Crush: scrolly pieces made with 18k pink and yellow gold and warm-toned gemstones like Peach Moonstone and Fire Opal, but my new pieces for winter will mostly be 18k yellow and white with blue and purple stones, so keep an eye out for that! Also, I have amassed a collection of unique gemstones that I’m using to design a collection of cool one-of-a-kind rings. Oh, and my one-of-a-kind and limited-edition colored stone cap earrings have gained a following, so I’ve been having fun expanding that collection as well. And, in the middle of all this, I make time to be with my Favorite Creation, my 5-year-old son, Hudson!

Flying back from our Alaskan honeymoon adventure, my husband and I met Caren and Kenny, a lovely couple from Santa Fe, NM. My heart was immediately drawn to their charming, outgoing personalities, but my eyes were immediately drawn to the sparkle on Caren's ring finger. She told me that YOU made her wedding rings for her and reset her diamond. I can't tell you how much I love your design and this ring, in particular! My ring is also a hammered band, but made of rose gold. Caren's hammered or "crushed" rings were the only other rings I've seen with that treatment. Anyway, I just had to say that you have a definite admirer in me! Maybe when Dan (my wonderful husband) and I are ready to make an investment in a more valuable ring, we'll come talk to you! A trunk show at Dolce Jewels, September 2 – September 4, features Pamela Froman's fine jewelry collection of handmade, one-of-a -kind, limited edition pieces comprised of multiple colors of precious metals (22 karat gold or platinum) and rare natural stones.

Born and raised in New York by her mother, the well-known sculptor and designer, Ann Froman, Pamela graduated from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology. She subsequently moved across the pond, settling in Paris, where she began her career designing jewelry for the top couturier salons, including Courreges, Cacharel, Carita, Guy Larouche, and Valentino.

The Connoisseur's Trail auction in Vail, CO

Pamela was featured in the Summer/Fall 2010 issue of Vail Beaver Creek Magazine, and their special insert, Panache, because she is donating a one-of-a-kind pair of "Scroll Crush Cap" earrings (18k Gold with Turquoise & Diamonds) to the annual Connoisseur's Trail auction. Proceeds from "The Connoisseur's Trail" will go to the scholarship fund for the Battle Mountain High school ProStart culinary program.
ProStart is the career-building program for high school students who are interested in culinary arts and restaurant and foodservice management. Throughout an exciting two-year period, they study in the classroom, participate in mentored work experiences, and test their skills in local and national competitions.
ProStart is an excellent career starter for high school students, an exciting teaching opportunity for educators, a truly rewarding experience for ProStart Coordinators, a chance to share practical knowledge for mentors, and a smart investment in the future for ProStart partners.
The Battle Mountain ProStart Culinary Team took first place at the Colorado Restaurant Association's state competition in March 2010 and placed fourth at the nationals competition in April 2010. ProStart and culinary teacher Sharon Wible and mentor chef Paul Ferzacca have helped students in the program win eight state competitions, one national competition and two second places in national competitions.

My recent trip to Vail for a Trunk Show at The Squash Blossom gallery was sort of a working vacation, because I got to bring my family with me! We had such a great time. And my husband, who is a professional photographer, got some amazing shots of the beautiful scenery, as well as the cool gallery that was hosting the event. One-of-a-kind "Roman Nymph" Necklace

I was excited to participate in this year's Dallas Rocks / Diamond Empowerment Fund Charity Auction, which raises money to support higher education in South Africa! I decided to donate my "Roman Nymph" pendant, a one-of-a-kind piece made of 18k yellow "crushed" gold with Morganite, Tourmaline, Diamonds, and a lustrous Pink Freshwater Pearl. The winning bid also received one of my signature leather boxes and, of course, a chain to wear the pendant on.

If you've been reading my blogs, then you know I am currently working on a project for the Diamond Empowerment Fund; a stylish unisex Dog Tag that will help raise more money for this worthy cause. This project is still in the works, but I'll let you all know when the Dog Tag is available for purchase. I think I might even make a one-of-a-kind "blingy" version of the Dog Tag for next year's Dallas Rocks event!

The first day of the trunk show at Churchill's in Kansas was at their flagship store in Fairway. It is a very cool store, filled with fabulous jewelry, cool handbags, clothes, shoes, accessories and antiques. The store's owner, Sally, is great, she has a wonderful energy about her, and great taste, and was a blast to be around! She knows how to engage everyone! Chris is the main guy at Churchill's, he is a great salesman, and everyone loves him! Kansas was such a great place, we loved it!

We just saw the new JQ Magazine, their special "Ten Trends 2010" issue, and Pamela's designs are used to illustrate two of the trends!

#2, Unique Materials, shows Pamela's "Wrapped Cap" earrings with Lapis Lazuli and Diamonds. The Lapis earring is a one of a limited edition, but each pair is unique; some of the stones are flecked with gold! This earring style is also available with Rutilated Quartz, and other one-of-a-kind gems. The Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry Collection includes two other earring cap styles as well, most of which are one-of-a-kind!

#8, Symbolism, shows Pamela's beautiful "Ombre Gothic Cross", which "fades" from 18k White to Green to Yellow, finishing in a rich 22k; this particular piece is set with a deep red Garnet.

Imagine working every day in a studio that looks as if it’s sailing into the sky, ﬂooded with natural light and ﬁlled with the soothing sounds of exotic birdsong and gently babbling fountains. That’s exactly the inspired setting where Pamela Froman pours creativity, joy, and a sense of well-being into each of her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. She even has a plush, carpeted area for her four-year-old son, Hudson Elijah, to play while she dreams up new designs. Hudson’s picking up a thing or two from his mom while he plays. “This past Mother’s Day I had to follow a trail of Hudson’s dinosaurs and plastic bugs to my present,” Pamela recalls. “It was a sweet surprise. He made me a necklace with beads on it. I guess he is following in his mother’s footsteps, sort of!” Spoken like a daughter who followed her own mother’s artistic footsteps. “One of the most important ingredients in my love for art is my mother, Ann Froman,” the designer shares. Pamela’s mother is a renowned artist whose sculptures have been displayed in museums and galleries all over the world. Ann got her start as a shoe designer, and Footwear News’ fashion editor-at-large, Vivien Infantino, recalled meeting Ann and baby Pamela during an interview in the artist’s home years ago: “We were in the kitchen and [Ann] was making cereal for her baby and I remember that there were little ﬁgurines of clay everywhere. She was always sculpting.” Pamela’s own work has a wonderfully weathered, beautifully battered look with a rough-meets-reﬁned feel. “I love irregular surfaces,” the designer explains, “so most of my pieces are textured with a special hand-hammering technique I call ‘Crushed.’” Combined with a satin ﬁnish created on a customized wire wheel, the Crushed texture gives a much softer, more feminine feel to the metal. Pamela worked with a jeweler/caster to painstakingly mix a signature palette of gold alloys that are muted and soft and look harmonious when she uses them together. “The colors of the metals are very important to me. I love to use 18k yellow, pink, and green gold with beautiful stones to create a contemporary look that can be worn with designer jeans on the weekend, or with a designer gown on the red carpet.” Pamela’s had the good fortune to be showered with awards and accolades from nearly every corner of the jewelry and fashion industry. This past June, Pamela was honored at the 2009 Couture Design Awards with the “Best in Bridal.” Her winning entry, the beautifully alternative “Crushed Mélange” bridal suite, is crafted from 18k pink, white, and green gold with sparkling diamonds. The engagement ring features a unique opalescent milky diamond, which not only adds to the visual appeal of the ring, but is also less expensive than a colorless diamond of similar size. At last year’s prestigious Town & Country Couture Design Awards, also known as the Oscars of the jewelry industry, Pamela was awarded the “Best of Gold” for her stunning Gothic Harlequin Cross pendant. It features a beautiful aquamarine cut in the shape of a cross, and the back of the pendant is as beautiful as the front, with detailed scroll cut-outs surrounding the designer’s signature “PF” logo. Although an impressive roster of celebrities have a “Crush” on Pamela’s jewelry, she’s less concerned about who’s wearing her jewelry than how it’s being worn. “Two people can wear the same piece and it will have a completely different look,” Pamela says. “I feel strongly that individuality is the underlying theme of beauty.” Pamela’s hip yet timeless pieces are made to be worn and treasured for generations to come. “I believe that the more a piece is worn the more beautiful it is because it becomes part of the person’s essence.”

"Harlequin Crushed Nonconformity" Cufflinks

I just finished making these one of a kind 22k & 18k white gold cufflinks... they are different shape milky aquamarines (with prismatic inclusions!) accented with diamonds. The aquamarines are beautiful, especially the way the milkyness runs through the stones, and how the light picks up the iridescent flecks. I also love that they are 2 totally different shapes, yet they totally complement each other. They are pretty nice size too, a little over an inch, and I think they would look great on a white shirt! These are definitely for the man who wants something unique!

National Jeweler magazine just featured a gorgeous pair of Pamela Froman earrings in their 2009 Fall Runway Report, Season Sense, to illustrate the popularity of "organic, sculptural forms." These colorful gold earrings are from Pamela's innovative "Ombre Crush" collection, inspired by the gradual color fade produced by the textile dip-dye technique. Although these earrings may look dip-dyed, each color is actually achieved with a different color of gold (18k white, 18k green, 18k yellow, and 22k,) which Pamela creates with special alloys. Cool, huh?

Hi Everyone,

We got back from Telluride last week, we had a great trunk show at Dolce Jewels, and a fun time! It is so beautiful there: the mountains are just gorgeous, and the views look like paintings. The people are so nice and down to earth. And Beau, the owner of the store, and Susan, his main salesperson, were both so wonderful to work with! The Telluride Film Festival was going on at the same time, so we got to hear a lot of opinions about the different films in the festival. (We almost got to see the film "Coco before Chanel" at the outside theater in the park, but we got rained out.) I did have a little problem with the altitude sickness, because Telluride is about 8500 feet above sea level; I had problems when I was in Aspen, and this was even higher. I had to drink tons of water, and by the last day I was feeling almost normal! We got to meet a lot of interesting new clients and I love getting to meet collectors in person, because I am usually in my studio, and that interaction is great! I hope to go back again in the winter time... I will let you know when that will be!

Hi Everyone,

I get asked a lot where I have gotten inspiration and about my background etc. Well one of the most important ingredients in my love for art, is my Mother, Ann Froman. She is a famous talented sculptor who has had an amazing career. Her work is in Museums and Galleries all over the world. She has a diverse collections of sculpture, from, the Bennington Museum commisioned dancing bronzes, to Woman of the Bible, to Fashion Figures, she has a fabulous acrylic collection, to Holocaust pieces. In fact, one of her Holocaust pieces, called "Survival" that stands 9 feet tall and is in an edition of 9, is at Harvard University and also in front of Brooklyn College. But she also has a sense of humor with her collection called "Nude York" (typical New York people are naked except for accessories). Some of my favorite are from her emotional pieces, like "The Lovers" above, she gave it to me for my anniversary, and it just is so sensual. My mother actually started as a shoe designer, and was one of the top designers in her field, infact there was an article written in Footwear News below just a few years ago.

They were some of the biggest names in the business.

Before Sigerson Morrison, Kate Spade and Tamara Mellon created their own fashion empires, Ann Froman, Joan Helpern, Florence Otway and Bonnie Smith were the It-Designers of the shoe industry. For many decades, each of these women played a key role in defining the direction of footwear design.

Today, all four have left the shoe world to pursue new careers light years away from the world of lasts, sketches, boutiques and pumps. But each of these powerful talents has left a lasting impression on the business they loved, and as a group, they are often credited with paving the way for a whole new crop of female designers.

Ann Froman, 60, was one of Nina Footwear's top designers in the 1960s and 1970s and broke new ground by designing the first fashion-driven down boot and rubber-bottomed pump. Today, she is an acclaimed sculptor whose work has been on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn College.

While these former footwear designers are now traveling down extremely different paths, they share a common goal: to lend their considerable talents to a host of new careers. Here, Footwear News catches up with Froman, Helpern, Otway and Smith, and looks at the post-footwear lives of the prestigious group of women.

Now a world-renowned artist whose sculptures have been displayed at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn College, the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Ann Froman still has a shoe fetish.

"For the last 36 years, I've lived off my sculpture," she said. "But if I go to a new city, I still walk into a shoe store before I go into an art gallery."

Froman's passion for design -- both apparel and shoes -- began as a child. She attended the High School of Art and Design in New York, and then the Fashion Institute of Technology. After that, she moved to Paris to study painting and architecture under the legendary Le Corbusier at the Palace de Fontainbleu School of Fine Art. "I showed him my designs, and he felt I should switch my major from painting to sculpture," recalled Froman.

But she returned to New York and landed her first job in 1960, designing clothing for Abe Schrader. After a couple other apparel-design stints, she decided she wanted to design shoes. "I always had a shoe fetish," Froman recalled. "I used to draw them all the time." So she began flipping through the classified section of Footwear News and came upon a position for a freelance shoe designer at St. Louis-based International Shoe Company. She sent in a few of her sketches.

The company liked what they saw, and before she knew it, she was again drawing shoes -- this time, for pay.

In 1964, she moved on to the famed Fleming-Joffe, a company known for its high-fashion leather goods and exotic skins; Charles Jourdan, Bruno Magli, Nina Footwear and Ferragamo were only a few of the companies that purchased their materials from Fleming-Joffe.

During this time, Nina Footwear's Mike and Stanley Silverstein "begged" Froman to leave Fleming-Joffe to become their company's full-time designer. "They really wanted me," she recalled. "One time, they even offered me a Rolls-Royce if I came and worked for them."

So two years later (and with no Rolls-Royce), Froman accepted a position at Nina, where, she said, Stanley Silverstein taught her how to run an entire shoe through the factory, from last to heel. "She was greatly talented, had great ideas, and she had a handle on what design was all about," said Silverstein.

A few years later, Froman went out on her own, designing for Caressa, Polozio, Gambet Shoe Company and Belgrade Shoe Company. Over the next 10 years, the designer made a lasting mark on the industry: She designed the first-ever pair of fashionable down boots for women. She created Lucite-heeled shoes, boots with white Christmas lights running down their backs, shoes that fold up, and alligator boots on 4-inch platform heels for Sammy Davis, Jr. (He wore them for the first time on "The Tonight Show" starring Johnny Carson.) "I was one of the first to make `monster shoes' on big wide lasts.

I was also the first to put rubber shoes on soles," said Froman. "Everyone laughed then, but they shouldn't have. As far as I'm concerned, I don't think people knew how to make comfortable shoes."

While she was busy creating cutting-edge footwear for a slew of well-known companies, Froman never put her sculpting aside. "One time I went to her home to interview her," recalled Vivian Infantino, Footwear News' fashion editor at large. "We were in the kitchen and she was making cereal for her baby and I remember that there were little figurines of clay everywhere. She was always sculpting."

In the early '70s, at a time when Froman's career was at its height, she decided to quit footwear design and pursue her sculpting full-time. "Everyone thought I was nuts," she recalled. "But I had started to collect art and I was so thrilled with sculpture."

She enrolled in a sculpture course at the New School in New York and on her first day of class, her instructors told her to leave because, "They said I was a natural talent and they had nothing to teach me," Froman said. But she continued the course, and six months later she had her first one-woman show. It sold out.

Today, Froman said her medium of choice is bronze and that her artistic influences range from the Bible to relationships to politics to world events. Her Women of the Bible collection (1977) consists of 21 bronzes depicting religious characters, such as Jezebel and a pregnant Eve without a belly button; Froman's Holocaust Collection (1980) includes her most famous piece, "Survival" -- a two-tiered sculpture depicting a huddled mass of people gazing reflectively into the sky. Versions of the sculpture are now on display all over the country, some at the entrances of Brooklyn and Radcliffe Colleges.

"She puts life into a piece of metal," said Silverstein, who today is an avid collector of Froman's sculpture. "You look at it and you can see their smile and what is behind them. I've seen very few people do it like that. She's unique in that way."

But in 1999, Froman's career took a drastic turn. She fell down a flight of stairs, and shortly thereafter lost her sight. She was completely blind for two and half years. "I couldn't see or sculpt, but really wanted to do something," Froman said. "But I was depressed, so a dear friend of mine took me to [Upstate New York to relax for a while]." There, Froman had the vision to open her own gallery. So in June 2001, with the help of her husband, family and friends, the Ann Froman Gallery opened in Rhinebeck, N.Y. The 1,500-sq.-ft. space is now home to much of her work, while it also hosts shows for other renowned artists.

After several rehabilitating operations, Froman regained her sight in January 2003. "My friends tell me God gave me back my sight so I could sculpt again," she said. Today, 60-year-old Froman is sculpting her first piece since she regained her sight. She said the subject matter is "top secret" and that if she divulged any further information she could be disqualified from the event.

She now frequently negotiates with museums and galleries, planning one-woman exhibitions and showings of her sculpture. In fact, later this summer, the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will host an exhibition of her work. "The work I do today reflects my background," Froman said. "My fashion design, art and architecture has all culminated together into my sculpture."

Pamela Froman wins JAWA Award for "Get Crushed" Campaign!

InDesign Magazine recently published the results of their second annual Jewelry & Watch Advertising Awards competition (also affectionately known as "the JAWAs") and we were excited to see Pamela Froman's "Get Crushed" campaign took 2nd place in the Manufacturer/Designer Procuct-Only Magazine Ad category!

Here's what a couple of the judges had to say about our "Get Crushed" campaign...

David Marks, co-founder of The Collaboration, a full-service marketing agency in Kansas City:
"'Crushed' is a much easier word to remember than the 'hand-hammered technique' Pamela Froman uses. Froman makes a convincing case that the line includes something for everyone with multiple examples of her pieces in each ad. And the play on words about having a crush stays cute, not hokey."

"Nearly 160 companies submitted more than 350 ads for consideration by our exceptional panel of judges, which includes the president of marketing for NBC Entertainment, three award-winning owners/directors of national marketing firms, an industry association director, and the president of a prestigious retail operation.
Judges were split into two groups of three, and none were allowed to vote on an ad in which they had a vested interest. They were asked to score each ad on five different criteria dealing with quality of production/graphics/photography, creativity, innovation, and emotional impact. Each criterion was graded on a scale of 1 to 10, which meant a minimum score of 5 and maximum of 50 for each ad, per judge. For any given criterion, a "1" meant the judge felt the ad was average in that quality, while a "10" indicated that the ad was extraordinary and beyond all expectations. A perfect score for an ad would have been 150.

When Vegas Magazine editor Laurie Brookins requested an interview with Pamela Froman about the upcoming Couture/JCK shows (last month), Pamela was honored to be selected out of the hundreds of designers who exhibit each year! Of course, the current economic conditions are on everyone's mind, so Ms. Brookins was most interested to know Pamela's thoughts on how the economy would affect the jewelry shows. An excerpt from the article follows:

Los Angeles-based Pamela Froman, who designs an eponymous jewelry collection, is likewise upbeat about traffic at Couture this year. "What I'm feeling is that we need to support each other now more than ever," she says. "I make everything here in LA, so I'm very motivated to support the idea of American-made as well as the small-business owner, whether you're a small jewelry store or a small jewelry designer." Froman, who captured the top prize at last year's Couture Awards, will debut an additions to her Ombre´ Crush collection this year, as well as a grouping of opals and diamonds set in 18k white, [yellow,] or rose gold.
Ultimately, no matter what the category, Froman believes there will be one trend that will emerge overall at JCK and Couture this year. "Anytime you're challenged by the economy, that's when people are going to be out there looking for something different," she says. "The way to set yourself apart is with the unique and special, pieces with stories. That's the way to come out on the winning side."

"Individuality is the underlying theme of beauty," muses Pamela Froman when summing up her philosophy about creating jewelry. To achieve this individuality, the award-winning designer's collection is handcrafted in Los Angeles, thus ensuring that no two pieces are identical, even if similar in design. Marie Helene Morrow of Reinhold Jewelers in Puerto Rico, who carries Pamela's line, says, "Pamela doesn't overlap with any other designers. Her hand-hammered technique [which Pamela calls "Crushed"] is completely different and unique to her. The pieces are extremely versatile and can be worn every day and for any occasion."
Having won awards for her multiple-color gold designs (2008 Town & Country Couture Design Award and 2009 AGTA Spectrum Consumer's Choice Award), Pamela is now combining high-carat gold colors in yet another unique way. Pamela Froman's unisex "Hope" Dog Tag

Allow me to explain...

This year, The Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) partnered with the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.) for their annual DIVA Design Competition, entitled "DIVA Gives Back!"

"The DIVA competition gives women across the country an opportunity to showcase their design skills," noted WJA president Yancy Weinrich, "This year, by partnering with the Diamond Empowerment Fund, we're also providing women with the additional opportunity of making a difference in the world."*

There were 3 categories in the competition this year: "Canadian Diamond DIVA", "Red Carpet DIVA", and "DIVA Gives Back"... Pamela decided to submit renderings to the DIVA Gives Back category, which challenged designers to create "an inspiring design that can be mass marketed as an affordable jewel to support the Diamond Empowerment Fund. The current design is a unisex bracelet (the famous Green Bracelet designed by Russell Simmons) What would you create that everyone could wear to show their support for the children of Africa?" and one of her designs (shown above) was selected as the winner!

Judges loved Pamela's unisex Dog Tag! The word HOPE, the small diamond set in gold, and the green stone drop, all serve to remind us that proceeds from the sale of this piece will go to help the disadvantaged people in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource. Pamela also plans to create a "bling-y" version of this piece to be auctioned off at the star studded Dallas Rocks: The Diamond Dinner and After Party gala benefit and auction to benefit D.E.F. in November.

The DIVA Awards were presented at a press conference during the JCK Show in Las Vegas, and was followed by a celebratory cocktail party later that evening at LAVO at the Palazzo. It was a fun night! Snapshots to follow...

at the Couture Design Awards

The Couture Design Awards Gala last night was amazing! It felt like we were at the Oscars! (Which is apropos, since the Couture Design Awards are often referred to as the "Oscars of the fine jewelry industry".) There was also a surprise Celebrity Guest Presenter: Hollywood Stylist / Reality TV Star, Rachel Zoe!
As I mentioned yesterday, Pamela Froman was a finalist in two categories: Gold & Bridal... it seems the voters fell in love with her alternative take on the traditional wedding set, because she took top honors for Best of Bridal Design!!!
I have some great snapshots from the fabulous event that I will upload when we get back to LA, so be sure to check back next week!

Hi Everyone! The Couture Design Awards Gala is tonight, and (drumroll, please...) Pamela Froman is a Finalist in two categories!!! How fantastic is that?!
